Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle & Debussy’s La Damoiselle Élue
Let us explore together what love can and cannot conquer.
Puget Sound Concert Opera brings you a rare opportunity to hear these two beautiful and unique pieces in one evening. Prepare yourself for the ultimate “tell all” as you join young bride, Judith coming home to her bridegroom’s dark Castle for the first time. But this Castle is actually his mind and the seven locked doors within hold the different aspects of his identity. As Judith begins to open Bluebeards locked doors, she does bring light and love to being. But what will the final door bring? Sung in English and arranged especially for four hands piano, Bluebeard’s Castle will stay with you long after you leave.
To contrast the darkness of Bartok’s music, the heavenly sounds of Debussy’s La Damoiselle Élue will shine forth and chase all darkness from our souls. Debussy sets Rossetti’s poem “The Blessed Damozel” for female chorus with two soloists. Rosetti, inspired by Poe’s “The Raven”, chooses not an earthly lover grieving a lost
soul but an angelic soul taken too soon. La Damoiselle Élue, leans out over the golden bar of heaven to observe the man she loves below. They both pray that love will reunite them and so she waits until he comes.
