The musical and storytelling heart of the Appalachian Mountains comes to Friday Harbor on Saturday, January 31 when Kentucky's Roadside Theater brings Ron Short and his one-man show, Music from Home, to the Whittier. Since 1975, the theater company has been writing, staging and touring original plays drawn from the rich history and culture of its mountain home. Short's performance features powerful vocal renditions of original songs - sometimes sung a cappella; sometimes accompanied by banjo, guitar, fiddle, and accordion. Woven through the musical score is a narrative of plain spoken poems and biting commentary about life and love.
The company's visit coincides with Friday Harbor's celebration of its centennial. And since SJCT's 2010 Islands Playwrights Festival will center on plays and monologues related to the history of Friday Harbor, the San Juan Island Community Foundation has made a special grant* enabling local playwrights to attend Short's performance to experience his (and Roadside's) particular type of storytelling. In addition, Roadside's Artistic Director Donna Porterfield will visit Friday Harbor in April to lead workshops on story circles (the method Roadside uses to create their programs). * Playwrights: Please call Merritt Olsen at 378-3211, ext. 29 to reserve your complimentary seat.
