Curious about what our alternative health community has to offer? Come check out the Lavendera Center for Massage this Thursday, March 15th

Every third Thursday a month, Lavendera will be sponsoring a free Community Health Service evening. 7—9PM.

Depending on the evening, massage therapists, chiropractors, jin shin practitioners, aromatherapists, naturopaths, nutritionalists, will provide free 15—minute clothed treatments. We will also have free 15—minute intuitive card readings on some evenings.

This is a great way to visit our beautiful space and have a chance to experience some of the different therapies that are available on our island.

The hills are alive...with The Sound of Music which will be the main attraction in SJCT's Whittier Theatre during the month of May.

One of the most beloved musicals of all time, the Rodgers and Hammerstein play will feature more than 30 island actors and actresses, directed by SJCT's executive director Merritt Olsen. 'One of the joys of directing a musical is that the spirit of collaboration is heightened,' said Olsen. 'I'm called the director, but I'm not a set or costume designer. I'm not a choreographer or a musician. Without ‘specialists' working with me to conceive and execute this production, The Sound of Music would be in big trouble.'

In addition to Music director Jim Collado, vocal coach Carol Hooper; choreographers Lisa Duke and Margaret Hall; costume designer Anita Welch; scenery and lighting designer Steve Judson; properties coordinator Ted Soares; stage manager Ellen Roberts; plus a large crew of other volunteers will assist Merritt in bringing the melodious and romantic story of Maria and Captain Von Trapp to life in Friday Harbor.

Notice of Joint Planning Commission and County Council Hearing on an Ordinance Regarding Regulations for Fish and Wildlife Habitat Conservation Areas (FWHCAs), Amending Chapter 18.20, and Sections 18.10.040, and 18.30.160 of the San Juan County Code; and Notice of SEPA Determination

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN Notice that the San Juan County Council and Planning Commission will conduct a joint public hearing on an ordinance amending the Critical Area provisions of the San Juan County Code. The ordinance addresses Fish and Wildlife Habitat Conservation Areas. These amendments are proposed to fulfill the periodic update requirements of RCW 36.70A.130. The hearing will begin at or after 8:45 a.m., Friday, May 18, 2012, in the Legislative Hearing Room, 55 Second Street, Friday Harbor, WA. The hearing may be continued from time to time and place to place as may be desired by the Council without additional written notice.

Interested parties are encouraged to attend & submit written or oral comments. Written comments submitted prior to 8:00 a.m. May 17 will be copied for the Planning Commission and Council members. If written comments are submitted after 8:00 a.m. May 17, or at the hearing, please provide 20 paper copies. In addition, videoconferencing for the purpose of public comment will be available at the Orcas Island Public Library only. The meeting will be live streamed at http://sanjuanco.com/council/video.aspx.

The proposed ordinance: revises the list of maps used to identify FWHCAs; modifies definitions of terms; adds a section on applicability; identifies types of FWHCAs; adopts provisions associated with the use of maps; revises the classification system to meet current state requirements; establishes protection standards including standards for aquatic FWHCAs including streams, lakes over 20 acres in size and marine shorelines, as well as upland habitats and specific species; and revises the process for nominating species of local concern.

State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) Review. An Environmental Checklist for the proposed amendments was reviewed, and it was determined that adoption of the proposed regulations will not have a significant adverse impact on the environment, and an environmental impact statement is not required under RCW 43.21C.030(2)(c). Under WAC 197—11—340(2) a Determination of Non—Significance was issued on May 1, 2012. Comments on this determination must be submitted by May 16, 2012. Following a final decision this determination may be appealed with the underlying action to Superior Court or State Boards as provided in RCW 36.70A, RCW 90.58, and RCW 36.70C. For appeals to Superior Court, the appeal period is 21 days and for appeals to the Growth Management Hearings Board, the appeal period is 60 days.

Copies of the ordinance, SEPA checklist, SEPA Determination and associated documents will be available on or before May 2, 2012 from the San Juan County Community Development & Planning Department at http://www.sanjuanco.com/cao/documents.aspx. Are you interested in becoming a trained and certified Marine Naturalist?  Or have you ever just wanted to know more about the amazing animals that share your ecosystem?  The <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = 'urn:schemas—microsoft—com:office:smarttags' />Whale Museum is currently accepting registrations for its Spring Marine Naturalist Training Program.  The object of this program is to provide a learning experience that assists adults in becoming qualified regionally as professional or volunteer naturalists.  The course is endorsed by the Pacific Whale Watch Association.  Dates for the spring program are April 28, May 5, 6, 12, 19, and 20.  The main focus of the training is the ecology, current status and conservation of Southern Resident killer whales and other local marine species as well as discussions about the marine environment.  The course includes presentations on cetaceans, pinnipeds, otters, intertidal invertebrates, marine birds, and other topics such as geology, marine conservation, and current research projects.  Faculty includes Whale Museum staff, professional naturalists, marine scientists, and environmental educators active in the region.  Students will also participate in a variety of related field trips including the opportunity to practice their naturalist skills onboard a tour boat.  Tuition for the entire program is $$375 which includes an orca adoption and a Whale Museum membership.  There are no prerequisites other than high school graduation and a sincere interest to learn.   0:21366 1:Marine Naturalist Training Program 2:
