Two Catagories!!

Spring 2012 — Follow—up Testing
This category of testing is limited to those who submitted samples to be tested in the of Fall 2011 and showed deficient fertility! Limit one test per landowner.
Only 20 tests in total for this category for the the Spring testing will be sent to the lab. Cost is $$5 per test for shipping and handling. The SJICD will provide cost share for the additional $$34.00. We have limited funds for this category so first in, first served! The Test Request Form may be downloaded from our website — www.sanjuanislandscd.org.

Spring 2012 — New Testing
Testing for those who DID NOT TEST in the of Fall 2011. Limit one test per landowner. Cost is $$39.00 per test. The normal cost is $$59.00 for this test and agronomist recommendations. Our original Fall testing deal was not offered by the lab this time and this is the best deal we could get! The Test Request Form may be downloaded from our website — www.sanjuanislandscd.org.

The Challenge
*Have you ever tested your soil?
*Have you made changes since last fall?
*How fertile is your soil now?
*How does it compare with previous tests?
*Other landowners?
The only way to know if you are managing your soil well is to begin with a soil test. Results are emailed to you and the best improved results will be posted at the San Juan County Fair!

How to Participate
Soil samples must be taken between May 15th — June 21st.
Re—tests should be from the same area testing in Fall 2011.
New tests should be from an area of interest that is in production or will be this year—for example, a pasture, a market garden, or an orchard.

Drop—off samples, test request form & check at the San Juan Islands Conservation District, 540 Guard Street, Friday Harbor, WA or WSU Extension Office, 221 Weber Way, #LL, Friday Harbor;

Make checks made payable to San Juan Islands Conservatio District. All samples will be sent to AgSource Cooperative Services Laboratory . The same lab will be used for all tests. Results will be emailed and presented at the 2012 San Juan County Fair in August!

Please Join the San Juan Island Sailing Foundation for a presentation
about the America's Cup Catamaran Oracle with Wolfgang Chamberlain.

Wolfgang will be showing us the multimedia presentation made Oracle .
Wolfgang Chamberlain is an Island boy who as a child took, sailing
lessons on Percich Pond later he taught sailing lessons on the Pond, as
well as coached our High School Sailing Team. His Sailing Career has
taken him abroad to Race for New Zealand, Italy and Spain. The most
recent chapter in his Sailing Career is as the Head of the Shore Team
for the Oracle's Catamaran in the 2013 America's Cup in San Francisco!
Wolfgang is taking a break from the racing schedule to come show his
support of the San Juan Island Sailing Foundation and passing on the joy
of sailing.

This Fundraiser will include an Auction, a raffle for some Oracle Gear
and of course, a fabulous dinner.
So come to the Yacht Club on May 26th for an unforgettable evening and
Support the San Juan Island Sailing Foundation at the same time!

Projector screening at our library...and it is extremely timely.

Even politicians admit to having to spend an enormous
amount of energy pulling togther enough money
just to get (re—)elected.

And many from both parties were quite candid about
this process whille being interviewed for the film.

Is it any surprise that lobbyists play a big role in
the gathering of money?

Is money ever given out freely?? What are the obligations?

Farewell Gathering for Rebecca Clarke!

Island Rec's welcomes you to stop by their office on Wednesday May 30 between 3—4pm to say farewell to Recreation Specialist, Rebecca Clarke. Cake and refreshments will be served.

Clarke first started with Island Rec as a dynamic Camp Eagle Rock Director in the summer of 2008. She continued her work with Island Rec during the winter of 2008 and was hired full time in the summer of 2009.

Her contributions to Island Rec and this community were great and varied. She was adored by young children in the tumbling program; her creativity and fun loving spirit made her popular with school age kids; and was respected by teen and adult athletes for her attention to the details of fair and competitive play. In a most positive and genuine way she interacted with and touched the lives of hundreds of children, teens and adults while working at Island Rec.

For the near future Clarke plans to keep her home on the island. She plans to make the most of a summer off of work enjoying island life, exploring other areas of the country and spending time with her family.

Shantala will be performing Kirtan Chants at xyz studio June 22 at 7:00. They'll be bringing several instruments as well as two other musicians. They've toured around the world and we are quite lucky to have them here for one evening. It is the first time Kirtan will have been performed in Friday Harbor and it is certainly open to anyone — singers, non singers, people who have never heard kirtan. Tickets can be purchased at xyz in advance for $$15, online (shantalamusic.com — go to 'tours') for $$17, or $$20 at the door, if there is room.

Kathryn Trigg, Monotypes, Joan Stuart Ross, Encaustic and Abi Spring,iln Formed Glass 
Each of these artists explores the surface of paper, canvas or glass in a different manner. 
Working with printing inks and paper, Kathryn Trigg, infuses the paper urface with up to 30 layers of color creating an amazingly complex olored surface. Joan Stuart Ross continues her process with encaustic painting and ongoing affair with nature in the wild, culminating in this new series of paintings.  Abi Spring, a former painter and a current kiln glass worker, explores glass from a painter perspective without embedding volumes of color.

Island Arts League is offering the textile art class 'Nuno Felt an Art Scarf' with artist Patti Barker.  To register please send an $$85 check to Island Arts League, P O Box 1365, Friday Harbor.  There will be a $$40 materials fee payable to instructor on class day.

Students learn a wet—felting technique called nuno, involving silk and wisps of wool.  You will take home a beautiful, wearable art scarf in colors, patterns and textures of your choice.  No previous experience required.  Classes are held at Island Arts League member studio.  No drop ins, must pre—register.

Help support our local Friday Harbor Elementary School children's Art program and keep art education in our elementary school. Join us for the Works of Heart first time fundraiser Friday May 18th at 6:30 p.m. at the Mullis Center. Tickets are $$45 per person / $$80 per couple and may be purchased at: Friday Harbor Elementary School, Journal of the San Juan Islands or San Juan Fitness Club. Purchase price includes: Hors d'oeurves for Market Chef and Wine Tastings. Artwork from dozens of local artists and FHES students will be auctioned off along with a selection of wines. An Evening with Wilhelmine, with John Schneidermann from San Francisco playing baroque lute, Jeffrey Cohan on the one—keyed baroque flute and cellist John Lutterman, features Concerti by Wilhelmine's court lutenist Adam Falkenhagen, who thoroughly explored the new galant, or pleasing, style. Wilhelmine, the lute—loving sister of flutist King Frederick the Great whose 300th birthday is celebrated this year, transformed Bayreuth into an important cultural center with her husband the Margrave of Bayreuth and also a flutist. This will be the final 2012 performance of the Salish Sea Early Music Festival.
